Taha Abdullah Luft died on 11 October 2018 after being taken to a clinic a week before with diarrhea, a symptom a doctor attributed to him getting his first tooth. But after the baby’s health worsened, his father took him to a hospital where it was established he had cholera. He died three hours later. Contaminated water supplies used in farming and at home as well poor sanitation brought about by a buildup of garbage on the streets of Yemen's capital are feeding a cholera outbreak in the war-torn country, according to a medical source. Children are particularly vulnerable to the disease, with under five-year-olds representing 30.5 percent of the total suspected cases, according to World Health Organization (WHO) figures. According to the WHO, there have been over 1.2 million suspected cholera cases and 2,515 associated deaths in Yemen since April 2017. Yemen has been locked in a political and military crisis since the popular regional uprisings of 2011, with the Houthis taking control of the capital Sana'a in September 2014, expelling President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who is backed by Saudi Arabia. اتهم برنامج الأغذية العالمي التابع للأمم المتحدة, الحوثيين باحتجاز 51 ألف طن من مخزون القمح التابع للبرنامج في مدينة الحديدة غربي اليمن. وقالت الناطق باسم برنامج الأغذية العالمي التابع للأمم المتحدة هيرفي فيرهوسيل في تصريحات صحافية, إن مخزون القمح المحتجز يكفي لإطعام نحو 3.7 ملايين شخص في شمال ووسط البلاد لمدة شهر.
طالب وزير الإدارة المحلية رئيس اللجنة العليا للإغاثة عبدالرقيب فتح, الحوثيين بضرورة الإفراج الفوري عن القمح المحتجز, ووقف أي أعمال تخص الجانب الإغاثي والإنساني.
واعتبر فتح , هذا الإجراء مخالفا لكل القوانين الدولية والإنسانية, ويسهم في تردي الوضع الإنساني ومضاعفة معاناة ملايين اليمنيين.
وحمل المسؤول اليمني الحوثيين المسؤولية الكاملة والمباشرة في مضاعفة معاناة اليمنيين من خلال استمرار احتجاز القوافل الإغاثية, ونهب المساعدات الإنسانية, ووضع العراقيل أمام المنظمات الإغاثية المحلية والدولية, مؤكدا أن الصمت حيال ذلك استمرار هذه الأعمال (أمر غير مقبول).
إن أكثر من 22 مليون شخص يحتاجون للمساعدة أو للحماية في اليمن, بينهم 17 مليونا بحاجة إلى مساعدات عاجلة, و 8 ملايين يمني منهم بدون غذاء وقال, 75% إن من السكان يكافحون للبقاء على قيد الحياة.
